The Knee's Anatomy
Understanding the knee's anatomy can help one better understand how chiropractic treatments can help knee injuries. The knee is a joint that consists of four bones, the femur, the tibia, the patella, and the fibia. Tendons from calf muscles, the thigh and shin are attached to the knee joint. The knees move via two fibrous discs that are located inside the joint, which is stabilized by four primary ligaments. These are the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), the medial collateral ligament, the posterior cruciate ligament, and the lateral collateral ligament
How Do Knee Injuries Occur?
There are many ways in which a person can injure his or her knees. Pain often results from underlying conditions, such as arthritis, an injury resulting from overuse or by a sudden injury, such as a fall or a sports injury.
One of the most common knee injuries occurs on the ACL. According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, as many as 250,000 injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament occur each year in the United States.
What is a Collateral Ligament Injury Like?
When someone tears an ACL ligament in the knee, it is not unusual for it to be accompanied by a pop, and the sudden inability to walk. The knee itself can become dislocated and bruised. At times, a small fracture will also occur on the femur and at the back of the tibia. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) on the inside of the knee can also sustain a sprain.
Why See a Chiropractor for Knee Pain?
Whether you prefer to be treated with medical treatments that are traditional in the West or to use alternative treatments that are better known in the East, a chiropractor can blend both medical traditions to help bring solid relief. Your chiropractor in NYC can provide painless, gentle spinal adjustments that can really help.
One's nervous system is the main control system of the body and determines how it will heal. Chiropractic treatments help the nervous system to function as it should. When a chiropractic adjustment is administered to the knee joint, it can help restore the knee's full motion and function, which will expedite the healing process.
